Devon seconds E West Torquay thirds v Whitchurch seconds THE pitch at Cockington offered variable bounce and proved challenging on which to score runs. Whitchurch batted first and made a good start with Ben Hodge (23) and Ed Nettleship (14) adding 43 for the opening wicket. Tamblin and Wallace then added a further 42 for the third wicket. Wallace showed signs of a return to form, on his way to his highest score of the season. At 135-4 Whitchurch look set to post a challenging total, but then a typical Whitchurch wobble saw five wickets go for five runs. Father and son Paul and Sam Carpenter did the damage with three and four wickets respectively. Wallace departed for 43 and it was left to Northey (10) to take the score past 150. Whitchurch were dismissed for 153. The Torquay reply never really got going. Dunne held a fine catch off the second ball to remove the dangerous McEwan and the Whitchurch fielding was generally good throughout. Veterans Gavin Hall and Neil Tamblin used their experience to make run scoring hard. Hall removing the top order with 3-16, while Tamblin cleaned out the middle with 3-27. Only Sam Carpenter with 22 got going for Torquay and with wickets apiece to Hodge, Emma Jackman and Helen Jackman, Torquay were all out for 103; Whitchurch won by 50 runs.
