ANDY Houghton from Tavistock Athletic Club, and his son Ben recently completed the Kentmere Horseshoe fell race.
Andy ran was among 21 runners in the 60 to 69 age category out of 354 starters at the race in the Lake District. Ben finished 128th overall and Andy 241st.
The Kentmere Horseshoe fell race is a classic of its type and this year was the fortieth anniversary of the race. The race covers 19.8 kilometres with 1,008 metres of height gain.
The highest point was the summit of High Street at 2,716 feet.
The race followed a spell of wet weather but the cloud gradually lifted as the race progressed, finally lifting off the mountain tops and thus avoiding the necessity for map and compass work. Fell running bad weather kit had to be carried on this race in case of bad conditions. Twelve runners started but did not finish and there was one disqualification.
Andy told Times Sport: ‘At 69 I was pleased to complete the run and to finish sixth in my age category. There were many young people taking part and the first female home was a 23 year old student from Edinburgh University.’
