THREE Tavistock boxers were on the road last weekend, Alex Burd, Pete Jarman and Nathan Sellars.
Alex travelled to Bideford to take on Ilfracombe boxer Jordan Wheeler. This being a first outing for both boxers, both had to settle any nerves quickly. Alex started using his reach advantage to good effect in the opening rounds, but took too many unnecessary blows in return. In the end Alex’s good start won the judges decision and the final result was a win for Alex by a unanimous verdict.
Nathan Sellars and Pete Jarman travelled to Yeovil, Pete to represent Western Counties against the RAF and Nathan to compete against local opposition. Nathan’s opponent was Dean Richards of Yeovil ABC a slightly more experienced boxer who boxed from a southpaw stance. Nathan started well with good work rate, but the left handed Richards landed his shots more comfortably. Nathan took the fight to his opponent as best he could but had to overcome a reach advantage. In the end the decision was given to Richards.
Pete Jarman represented Western Counties in their match against the RAF, boxing in the 81 kg weight division. His opposition was the strongly built SAC Evington. Pete’s longer reach and better footwork was offset by the powerful punching rushing attack of his opponent. This was an evenly fought contest and much appreciated by the crowd. Forty seconds into the third and final round there was an accidental clash of heads which resulted in Evington sustaining a cut above his right eye. The bout was halted and the judges’ cards consulted for the result. Which was a narrow majority decision for Evington. In his first appearance for Western Counties Pete Jarman showed good composure and some developing boxing skills which he will build on for the future.
Boxers from Tavistock will be out representing Devon next week.
