Tavistock thirds 0

TAVISTOCK men were glad to get the hockey season finally underway with the resurrection of the third team which had been absent for a number of seasons. The quality, speed and pace of the game did not disappoint.
This was the first time that the squad members had played together in a competitive match so it was no real surprise that the opening phase of the game tended to be played in the Tavistock half of the pitch.
However, the early pressure was sustained by the defence of Martyn, Jack and Ed and as confidence grew the ball was moved out of defence via the midfield of Jacob, Toby, Ryan Jake and Jack to allow the forwards (Owen with some darting runs and Nick who retained some good possession) the opportunity to apply some pressure of their own and take the game to the opposition.
The Tavistock goalkeeper continually made some fine saves and kept the deficit down to 3-0 at the interval. Changes were made during the break to bolster the defence and this reduced the goals conceded during the second of play to just one.
One of their pre-match targets was to remain committed throughout the game and throughout play a Tavistock head did not drop.
The biggest compliment to Tavistock’s young side was made by the opposition defence who said that they admired the work rate, spirit and skill shown by the younger members of the team — who on their first outing showed real character. They were a real credit to their club.
