THIRTEEN schools and charities from the Tavistock area took part in an historic Viking Kubb tournament and shared a £2,400 prize pot.
Tavistock Community Primary and Nursery School and Outdoor Education Forum won their group titles after nail biting rounds, each receiving £500.
The event, orgainised by Round Table Tavistock, was a great success and not only saw great sportsmanship, but also a wonderful community spirit with apposing teams cheering each other on to the end.
The chair of the organisers Neal Taynton-Young said: ‘This is a great event and something that the Round Table is proud of and we’re already getting ready for next year’s Kubb tournament. It’s a superb day of fun and a great opportunity for local primary schools and charities to get to meet each other, the public and for Round Table to give something back to the community.
‘Having the Hildsvin Viking re-enactment group with us really added to the occasion teaching visitors about the Viking way of life —including cooking demonstrations, wood carving, weapons displays and trade and bartering.’
The event was opened by Tavistock Mayor Mandy Ewings. She said: ‘It’s great to see the Round Table involving schools and charities in this way and bringing something different to our town. Who would have thought that a Viking game of throwing sticks at a block of wood, would be so much fun!’
Every school and charity that entered received a £100 pound donation from the Round Table and anyone wishing to enter next years event should get in touch with Tavistock Round Table as places are already filling up fast.
