LOOKING to celebrate those in West Devon who have excelled in health and fitness an award scheme is asking for nominations to be put forward.

'Harpers Heroes', an award scheme set up by Meadowlands Leisure Pool, Tavistock, and Okehampton Parklands Leisure Centre, will honour those in the community who have reached major fitness goals or have impressed everyone with their dedication and skill.

Winners from the West Devon area will be named in nine categories: sport - celebrating achievements of sports teams within the leisure centres' facilities; shape, celebrating a member's weight loss achievement; health, celebrating a health related goal; a fitness related achievement. Furthermore, awards will be given to the coach of the year, personal trainer/fitness professional of the year, Harpers team of the year, and a lifetime achievement award and a hero award.

The deadline for entries is April 30, and regional winners will be included in a national shortlist.

Jon Smith, contract manager at the leisure centres, said: 'We are all very excited to be launching Harpers Heroes, we have some wonderful members and customers at our leisure centres who are an inspiration to us all, and it will be fantastic to honour them by naming them a Harpers Hero.'
