Exmouth U14s 14
Tavistock U14s 24
TAVISTOCK kicked off and Tom Scott sprinted off after the kick and causing the Exmouth catcher to knock on. This set the tone for the Tavistock pack and a relentless assault on every moment of Exmouth possession.
The away pack did not allow Exmouth to settle into any kind of rhythm and pressured every breakdown. James Roisetter stole ball at lineouts and Ben McKenzie and Alex Cottam did the same at the scrum.
The lack of clean ball kept Exmouth at bay allowing the Tavistock half backs Dan Pett and Luke Edwards to control the game.
Captain Harry Richardson burst through the opposition defence to score under the posts. Five minutes later he repeated the feat for Tavistock’s second.
Some quick passing from a tap penalty pulled one back for the home team. Exmouth desperately tried to get their swift backs away but were prevented by a solid defence from Tavistock’s Edward Tait, Sam Saunders. Harry Richardson, Noah Berridge and Matt Davey.
Tom Scott turned over possession and allowed Harry Edwards’ boot to relieve any pressure. Strong ball carrying from Jaxom Cann and Harry Law and new lock Devon Jackman kept Tavistock on the front foot.
Early in the second half , prop Charlie Meakin made a blistering run from the halfway line and was unlucky to have his try disallowed. However, from the resultant five metre scrum James Roisetter picked up from the back of the resulting ruck and reached through the smallest gap to score. Sam Wilton making numerous forays and Owen Staples on the other wing found the space to use his pace to outstrip the defence for Tavistock’s fourth.
Barnstaple U12s
Okehampton U12s
BARNSTAPLE set a fast pace from the outset, scoring in the first two minutes.
With Matt kicking the ball well away to restart, Okehampton fell into some good rucking before their opponents repossessed and scored a second try, closely followed by a third, despite some fierce pressure from Aedan.
Barnstaple continued to claim back the ball each time Oke stole it and they racked up the score, but Oke were by no means a walkover. They fiercely kept up the pressure as they engaged in strong defensive drives (Sam P, Sam S, Isaac, Aedan and Harry), some strong tackling (Sam P, Sam S, Luca, Tom, Isaac, Elliot, Alex, Marcus, Matt and Tyler) and several good runs (Luca J, Jacob, Marcus and Tyler).
From the second half onwards, Oke’s passion and determination showed in their outstanding defensive play. Matt kicked the ball into touch and Okehampton drove their opponents along the try line, hampering their try attempts with tackle after tackle. After Sam P ripped the ball away, Barnstaple fought back hard but Elliot came to the rescue and perfectly cleared the ball. There was a smooth catch from Elliot off a long kick from Barnstaple, and Jacob, who caught the starting kick after a Barnstaple try, later made a flying run down three-quarters of the pitch to put the ball down for Okehampton in the final 15 minutes.
Bideford U11s 75
Tavistock U11s 30
COLD, blustery and damp conditions greeted both teams. Tavistock started proceedings and Bideford made the best possible start by opening the scoring within two minutes.
The game then settled down although it was the home team that were the more incisive with Tavistock having little possession. To the credit of the visitors when they had the ball they looked threatening and due to some sublime quick passing managed to score through Callum.
Tavistock made Bideford work hard and were contesting at the breakdown to great effect; however, it was Bideford that ended the first half with a superior score of five tries to two with Tavistock’s other score coming from Matthew.
The second half was much more open to begin with and although Bideford scored first, Tavistock responded with three scores in quick succession from Matthew (2) and Ben,
Unfortunately for the visitors it was not the start of a comeback. The home team mastered the poor conditions better and outwitted Tavistock.
Despite the conditions this was an entertaining game and the final score from Tavistock came from Ben who ran half the length of the pitch after breaking away from a maul.
Launceston U11s 0
Okehampton U11s 15
BOTH teams were showing good passing skills with a few dropped balls because of the wet conditions.
Saul for Okehampton scooped a dropped ball and ran through to open the scoring. Shea made some great kicks into touch as flyhalf, moving the visitors towards the home team’s try line on several occasions. Okehampton’s relentless pressure kept edging Launceston back, but the home defence was hard to penetrate.
Mauls close to the try line meant Oke had to keep working to try to get through with Lachs and Callum, in particular, giving it all they could. Eventually, a penalty try was given, with Lachs scoring the try.
Play started again with Launceston making inroads into Oke’s half. Another phase of play found a maul close to the Launceston try line, but a kick by the home side sent the ball far out with Oke chasing again.
The second half carried on with Okehampton continuing to apply the pressure but the tables turned at the start of this half as Launceston came back stronger.
The Oke boys made the Launceston lads work to get their ground. Ed for Oke threw himself into the game and Shortie made some great catches out on the wing. An offload to Lachs sent him running up the wing with the tryline in his sights; lots of support from his team mates resulted in a try for Callum. There was a high tackle count throughout the game from Ben, Adam and Saul for Oke, while Josh, at scrum half, showed some quick thinking. Lachs, Toby and Callum were rucking throughout the game strongly.
This was a well matched game which showed some outstanding play from both teams.
