Tavistock Colts 22

Torquay Colts 5

TAVISTOCK Colts finally got to play a game after several weeks of cancellations due to the bad weather.

Playing in to the wind and up the slope of the pitch in the first half did not deter the home side and they were soon on the offensive.

The forwards kept up long periods of sustained pressure for long periods in the opening half. Richard Cann was threatening with the ball in hand before having to succumb to a shoulder injury after 30 minutes. Half backs George Hillson and Dom Hall kept their team on the front foot and after running a clever line Morgan Scott crashed over from close range for the opening try.

Tavistock kept up the pressure with Morgan Warnett looking to move the ball quickly and challenging for turnovers.

In the second half Tavistock soon added a second try from Dom Hall before a period of pressure from Torquay, who used their rolling maul to good effect and they scored their only try.

The Tavistock forwards soon came back at their opponents led by backrower Alec Hampden-Smith who carried strongly and was aggressive at the breakdown.

The wet conditions made handling difficult and Tavistock were unlucky on several occasions when the ball was spilled just as they looked like scoring. Joe Holbrook was unlucky not to score when a cross field kick from George Hillson was judged to have not been grounded despite Holbrook’s acrobatic efforts.

Winger Sean Donnelly did hang on to the ball and sailed past three defenders to score Tavistock’s third.

Chris Watts gave an assured display at full back, defending stoutly. Captain Theo Cousins contributed with his usual high work rate and a countless number of tackles. Fellow forwards Harry Jeans, Alex Lewandowski and Cameron McKie gave their all on an energy sapping wet pitch.

Tavistock’s final and bonus point scoring try came after some neat handling saw Joe Holbrook break clear and score. George Hillson added the conversion.
