Okehampton U15s 41
Tavistock U15s 19
OKEHAMPTON welcomed old rugby rivals Tavistock to Oaklands to play for the Bobby Burgoyne Memorial Cup, hoping to see their name on it for the third year in a row.
The first half started fairly evenly until ten minutes in quick ball by Oke picked up by Saul Holliday from the back of the scrum saw the ball fed out to Will Cunningham to open the scoring. Tavistock came straight back with a try of their own.
Twenty minutes in Joshua Burgoyne side stepped his way through the Tavistock defence, before passing the ball out to Saul Holliday to score on the wing.
The last five minutes of the half saw some stout defence from Okehampton to keep Tavistock out.
The start of the second half saw a few silly mistakes from Okehampton, which Tavistock utilised to score under the posts. The young Okes gathered themselves with real determination, replying ten minutes in with quick ruck ball chipped through by Joshua Burgoyne, which was well chased by Saul Holliday to collect and score. Okehampton kept up the pressure, leading to a penalty on Tavistock’s try line which saw Joshua Burgoyne score.
Twenty minutes in an injury to a Tavistock player meant both sides went to 14 aside. With Okehampton now well in charge, quick ruck ball went crossfield to put Joshua McCulloch across the line. This was rapidly followed by backs and forwards geling well, with Jordan Hill scoring under the posts.
Again on the offensive from the kick off, a lovely chip through from Joshua Burgoyne saw him chase, catch and cross the line to score. All credit to Tavistock who kept attacking, rounding off the game with a try of their own.
Oke put in a superb performance, with Cole Pengelly acquitting himself well in the second half when he switched to full back with Jordan Hill filling his space in the pack well. The whole of the Oke squad worked hard all around the pitch in both attack and defense, with Barnaby Waddell, Saul Holliday, Charlie Glanville and Matthew Denning stealing and spoiling a lot of Tavistock’s ball.
The game meant a lot to all the players and this was borne out in their efforts on the pitch, with a well deserved win - Bobby would have been proud of them.
Conversions Will Cunningham (3).
