OUTSTANDING in their field! — that's what the judges of this year's Devon Sports Awards think of Princetown FC, who won 'project of the year' at its award ceremony in Exeter.

The club was only formed last summer and now plays in the Plymouth and West Devon Saturday Combination League division four is going from strength to strength.

At the moment the team has to play its home games at Tavistock sports ground but are hoping to eventually secure their own pitch at Princetown.

The award is in recognition of all the hard work put in to form the team and provided a much needed recreational resource for the village.

Club chairman Warren Homden, who runs the club along with his wife and club secretary Anna, are delighted with the Active Devon Sports award.

'We are going from strength to strength with already 60 players signed up. Our aim is get three youth teams going and two adult ones - such is demand. At the moment we are having to do a 16 mile round trip for our home matches but our support has been brilliant with 70 people coming to cheer the team on. I reckon we will get more than a 100 when we secure our own ground at Princetown. We are determined whether it takes ten years, it will happen.'

The club are waiting to hear soon on news of their bid to Sport England to back their dream move. They have already raised £5,000 last year from The England Footballers Foundation; £12,000 from Sported and obtained smaller grants from West Devon Borough Council, Dartmoor Parish Council and the Active Villages projects. Dartmoor Brewery also provided sponsorship for home and away kits.

Warren wanted to say a special thanks to volunteer mentor Mike Carpenter, Hannah Coulston of WDBC and Julian Wills of Sported, who he says, without their help, the club could not have taken off.
