THE 2016/17 Winter League of the Moorland Ladies Dart League culminated in its presentation night on June 3 at The Tavy Club.
Chairperson Jan Dean and secretary Sue Cork were pleased to welcome Christine Leach and Lesley Gibson from Tavistock Hospital, League of Friends as their guests, who were chosen as this year’s charity.
Christine and Lesley kindly presented the trophies to this season’s winners and runners up. Throughout the season, the league held charity events in the form of quizzes, a ‘Round the Clock’ charity event and raffles.
Together with a donation from the league, the Moorland Ladies were pleased to present them with a cheque for £500.
The evening began with the finals of the Captain/Secretary cup, played between Sharon Holmes of Union Inn and Jane Sumner of the Market Inn. Defending her crown, Sharon closely missed retaining the title and lost out to Jane.
This was followed by the singles final between Brenda Pysden of Tavy Traders and Sue Cork of the Union Inn. After two close fought legs, Sue emerged the victor.
Three new perpetuals were presented this year - the wooden spoon, charity event winner and runner up.
The charity event trophies were kindly donated by Fred Gover, in memory of his late wife Lorraine, who had been an ardent player for the Union Inn team and is greatly missed.
At Fred’s behest, Sue Cork was proud to read out a few words which he had written. It was a very moving moment for Lorraine’s team and for Fred himself.
A moment was also taken to remember Steph Devey, a player for many years, who had also passed away during the season.
The presentation was followed by a buffet.
The League is always looking for new teams to join them, and would welcome any enquiries from the area. If any pub or club within a ten mile radius of Tavistock would like to enter a team of four ladies, further information can be obtained from, Sue Cork on 01822 616872.
