THERE have been mixed fortunes for Tavistock Tennis Club at the start of the Plymouth and District League Season
The club is running four men’s teams this summer, including a relatively young team — three of whom came up through the junior ranks of the club, in the first division.
Week one started well with a good win for the first team against old rivals Ivybridge, and two close matches for teams B and C, with both just losing by the odd set. In week two, with many regular players unavailable, results were less encouraging but there were still some close rubbers within each match.
There are two ladies’ teams. In the first week both teams lost 8-1. The A team were away to Ivybridge B, where the damp slippery artificial surface proved too much to cope with. The B team were at home against Yelverton A but despite close games only one set fell to our ladies.
The second week was more successful with the A team defeating Hill Lane A 6-3.
Frances Lindsay was in strong form in the first set against their first pair and Tavistock took it 6-0. The second set went to Hill Lane 6-4 but Tavistock stormed the tie-break in the third set 10-6. Frances and Hilary Picton won against their second pair 6-4, 6-1. Tavistock’s second pair Sue Parsons and Jenny Read played really well beating the Hill Lane’s second pair 6-4 6-2 and narrowly lost to their first pair 6-7 4-6.
