TWO trophies have been handed out at Tavistock Squash Club in recent days, with the finals of the racketball trophy and the junior boys’ trophy final.

This year’s final of the racketball trophy saw a rerun of the 2013 finale when Mike Benstead took on Simon Powell.

It proved an evenly matched contest, with Mike winning the first game 15-13, Simon fighting back to win the second game 15-12, Mike going ahead again 15-10 in the third, only for Simon to level things up with a 15-11 win in the fourth.

This set things up for a close decider. Mike forced some early errors from Simon and took a commanding lead he would eventually see out to win 15-10 and take the title after over an hour of play.

The junior boys competition is a non-handicapped event with matches played with full rules, but to the best of three instead of five.

The final was played on July 15 between brothers Ed and Oliver Smart. Ed, aged 16, and Oliver, 14, both play in the club’s leagues.

Ed made an excellent start to take a commanding lead in the first game, with Olly taking time to find his own rhythm. Despite coming back strongly, Edward took the game 15-9.

In the second game it was evenly balanced but Edward had just enough to come through and win the game 15-11 to win the trophy.

The game had some excellent squash and some great rallies and the standard was very high for this competition.

The club would love any girls interested in taking part in a junior girls’ competition to come forward.
