Honiton 0

THE match against Honiton Hornets was probably going to be one of the most important league matches for the first half of the season, with only goals separating the two teams for second and third place.

Captain Rochelle Woollacott gathered the players before the starting whistle and gave the all important motivational speech: 'our match, our goals, our win'.

The match started well, both teams vying in midfield for the ball. Midfield attackers Anna Speak, Holly Davidson, Sophia Marshall and Annabel Rademaker fought to gain possession of the ball and fed into the opposition D. Their efforts paid off with Alex Collins, supported by Hope Jewell at the front, managing to clip the ball into the goal from a strong and accurate pass by right hand winger Emma Wiseman. This alerted the Hornets of the rigorous fight on their hands but despite their gallant attempts to score, sweeper Sandy Douglas, voted 'man of the match' swiftly cleared any loose ball back to the forward line.

Alisa Gibb, playing in centre field, was on the ready and fed the ball to an awaiting attacker, Viv Weatherington, who on receipt of the ball got the better of the Honiton goalie, bringing the home team lead to 2-0.

Again the visitors fought back, challenging the defence but eagled eyed goalie Alice Wiseman displayed some excellent precision footwork saving several shots on goals. A quick thinking Debbie Pritchard had a superb game saving an all important ball a fraction short of the goal line.

However, the team's success did not stop there. Top scorer of the season, Alex Collins, got her second and final goal of the match securing the team's third position in the league for another week.

Throughout the match all players displayed excellent team work, with their accurate passing, creative play and a passion to score — a huge reflection of the success of the weekly training and coaching sessions.
