THE organisers of an Olympics' celebration are inviting any resident of Devon who is also an Olympic or Paralympic competitor – present or past – to join them for the occasion.
The public event in Exeter in September is designed to get people young and old to come together in the best amateur spirit – ie, for the love of sport and the arts.
There will be a range of activities on offer, including a torch-led parade with marching bands; dancing and music; sports' tasters and demonstrations; and the finals of a number of mixed-age area team sporting competitions that have preceded the day's event.
The day-long celebration, which has Lottery funding, has been organised jointly by Devon Senior Voice (DSV), the voluntary forum for the over-50s, and Devon Youth Service as part of Devon's contribution to the official London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
Ann Crawford, intergenerational lead for DSV and event chair, said: 'The fact that the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are being held in this country is truly inspiring to young and old alike, and we are glad that we have the opportunity to celebrate that spirit in Devon.
'We are particularly keen to invite to our event those Devonians who are actually competing in this summer's Olympics or Paralympics, or who have done so in past Games, summer or winter.
'We would indeed be proud if they would like to join us to for what promises to be a very special time, when everyone taking part will feel that they have been involved in something that is really rather special.'
The event, 'Generations Working Together to Celebrate the Olympics in Devon', will take place at the Matford Centre in Exeter from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, September 29.
