OKEHAMPTON Squash Club first team enjoyed another solid win at home against Paignton.
Dan Yeoman at string 5 lost 0-3 after a really close first two games. Dan picked up an injury in the third game allowing his opponent to finish off the match. Justin Gliddon at string 4 started slowly — struggling to pick up the pace in the first game — but recovered and upped the tempo to take the match 3-1.
Simon Ramsay at string 3 lost a tight match 1-3, with his opponent having good variation. Phil Allin at string 2 struggled at times to find the sweet spot but stuck at it hitting some good drops to win 3-1.
This left Phil Kemsley at string 1 needing to win his match. Phil played a tight game hitting some good width and length to come away a 3-0 winner. So a 3-2 victory for the team, and 15-8 point win.
The second team continue to find life difficult in their league and matters were not made any easier by travelling away to a top of the table Newton Abbot side who are unbeaten in the league. The team has also been affected by unavailabilities over the past few weeks.
As expected, all players struggled against strong opponents and the only point picked up by the team was by Sue Stanbury playing at string 5. Sue used all her experience to edge a close game, using variation to off-balance her opponent. The team hope for more competitive matches in the remaining fixtures.
