Okehampton Colts 18

WITH Sidmouth having inflicted the Okehampton's only loss of the season to date, the Colts travelled to their South Devon rivals knowing that a win would secure a place in this season's Devon Colts Cup final.

Choosing to play up the Sidmouth slope the visitors were soon into their stride and after some initial midfield exchanges they secured good position deep in the Sidmouth half . From a scrum wide on the right the Oke backs moved the ball sharply and with centres Cooper and Vincent both making half breaks, winger Craig Dennis came into the line from his blind side wing to feed full back Dean Andrews who finished wide on the left for the first score of the game.

The visitors retained control from the restart and after play had been taken into the Sidmouth 22, a misfired clearing kick gave the visitors an ideal attacking platform from a line out which was well executed by the forwards. The backs performed with precision for Andrew to go over for his and his side's second score to make it 10-0 to the visitors up after 15 minutes. The hosts though regrouped as the game entered a disjointed and scrappy phase from which it never recovered. The home side hit a well struck penalty to make the score 3-10 to the Okes at half time.

Throughout the second half neither team was able to put either shape or control on the game although the visitors again crossed the Sidmouth line with the superb U16s of Callum Pillivant and Liam Sampson combining with the former dotting down for the score .

Sidmouth added two further penalties and Craig Dennis added a final three pointer for the Okes but in all honesty this was a game best forgotten.

The positive is that Oke won a game playing badly but must break the habit of being in a commanding position and not finishing the opposition off.

The Okehampton Colts have a had an impressive season losing only one game to date and this result guarantees the team's place in the 2011-2012 Devon Colts Cup final against Ivybridge at the end of April. Hopefully, Okehampton will bring back the Devon Colts Cup to ORFC for the first time in more than 25 years.
