SIDMOUTH in East Devon was the venue for the latest round of the Devon boys' U12 hockey tournament.

The young Okehampton team were slow out of the blocks and conceded two early goals in the game against Sidmouth and Ottery. Once they settled they played well together and no further goals were scored and the score-line stayed at 0-2.

Isca in the next game proved a sterner test and their quick passing play resulted in a flurry of goals and a scoreline of 0-5.

Unperturbed, the young lads bounced back with a vengeance and played their best hockey of the day against Ashmoor. Working hard they took the initiative and scored the only goal of the game to win 1-0.

The final game was also a close won, but Marjons A scored the only goal to win 0-1.

Richard Jones from Okehampton Hockey Club said: 'It was a great effort from the boy's who are benefitting from playing in the tournament, and they should look to the next round.'

n OKEHAMPTON U12s' girls hockey team took part in the Devon Festival on Sunday in Exeter. Despite the cold weather the girls soon warmed up and played some exciting hockey.

Their first game was against Exe. The Oke team pushed forward intent on scoring and were rewarded when a determined Eleanor Marvin forged through the Exe defence to find the back of the net. Exe retaliated by attacking in numbers and eventually won the game.

Oke were unlucky to lose against Plymouth Hockey Club by one goal. The teams were evenly matched with end to end hockey. Against Plymouth Marjons Oke midfielders Sofia Nightingale and Beth Luxton worked hard, dropping back to defend and also pushing up in attack. These evenly matched teams battled hard resulting in a 0-0 draw.

Taunton Vale provided a tough challenge for the Oke girls. Excellent tackling from captain Izzy Rowlands and defender Sophie Wiseman helped to keep the strong Taunton forwards at bay but outstanding play from Oke keeper Lucy Wiseman meant that Taunton only won by one goal.

Oke's final game was against Tiverton. Again the teams were evenly matched and Oke nearly clinched victory with forward Rosie Pedrick having several shots on goal but none found the back of the net so the match ended in a draw.
