ELLA Percival from Okehampton Judo Club won gold at the BJA Plymouth Open, fighting at under 57kg in the under 16 years-olds age group which was merged with the under 60kg and over 60kg.

Ella, aged 14, although the smallest in the group won all her fights by ippon, showing real strength in her groundwork after throwing with lower score throws and finishing them on the ground.

Fellow club member Aidan Bostock, aged 17, won bronze in the men's under 73kg group, losing only to the gold medallist by a hold down after dominating him with attacks and a fast left handed throw in the earlier part of the fight. He won the rest of his fights by a variety of throws for Ippon one of which was a truly spectacular switching hip throw.

John Kent, aged 48, won bronze in the mens' over 100kg group, giving away 60kg (more than eight stone) in one contest and showed he could still mix it with the younger fighters even the big ones with a good mixture of standing and groundwork techniques and true warrior mentality.

Aidan and Ella train regularly at high performance Tamar Judo Centre in Saltash.
