SCRAMBLERS brave the weather for the eighth Sourton Scramble, which took place on Saturday.
Starting from Sourton Parish Hall a field of 84 runners battled the November elements and included entrants from as far away as Oxford and Southampton as well as strong representation from more local running clubs and runners.
Using the same course as last year, the leader's pace was fast despite wet conditions underfoot and all runners completed the course in good times.
David Tomlin from Teignbridge Trotters was first home in an impressive time of 43 minutes 44 seconds, given the conditions.
Andy Vallance of Okehampton Running Club beat his last year's time to come in second with 44.31. Andy held off the challenge of James Best from Tavistock Athletic Club, who came in third at 44.45. At only 16 years old, James also won the U21s competition and organisers hope to see him challenging for the top spot overall in future years.
Jo Meek also of Tavistock AC, beat her course personal best set last year to lead the female runners home in a time of 46.03 and was sixth overall. Sharon Daw (Mud Crew, 51.16), was second lady home with Helen Heard (Bude Rats, 51.37), coming in third female.
Tim Pratt (unaffiliated) of Bridestowe and Emma Sizmur (Okehampton Running Club), were the first local male and female home, both finishing well under the hour.
The rain held off for most of the race but those over the hour had to contend with a hail shower at the finish.
The 'fun run', was well attended with Emily Hatfield first girl home (and first overall), and Leon Horn first boy home.
Charles Ewen, on behalf of the organisers, said: 'As always, a huge thank you, to all involved in organising, officiating and marshalling the race and those in the kitchen serving up those cakes and buns to make sure that the field did not get any calorie deficit!'
The organisers would like to thank the sponsors without whom the race would not be possible and which raised more than £1,500 for local charities - Sourton Church, Sourton Village Hall and Bridestowe Cricket Club.
