TAVISTOCK started their division one season in the Okehampton and District Table Tennis League with two convincing 10-0 wins.

Firstly, against newly promoted North Wyke A who found the move up from division two against a strong Tavistock team of Roger Bowkett, Peter Hicks and Nigel Gerdart too strong to handle. The North Wyke team consisted of Enrique Cancer-Berroya, Steve Granger and reserve Jill Dilley.

The newly formed Mixtures team of Karen Stephenson, Sara Jackson and 11-year-old Emily Haskela all played well in the first two games. Sarah took Roger Bowkett to a fourth leg decider and Emily also took Peter Hicks to four legs.

Roger and Nigel won the doubles against Sarah and Karen for the 10-0 win for Tavistock.

IN The division one match of Okehampton A against Milton Abbot A Oke played two new players who played their first league matches with only John Squire from last year. Milton Abbot took a 2-0 lead. Ottila Pochat beat John and Tim Westcott beat Sam. Steve Madge pulled one back for Okehampton against Michael Blatchford.

Ottila and Tim went on to score fine maximums. Although Tim against Steve who took him to five legs just won 6-11 in the fifth leg. John Squire took him to four legs. Tim won 10-12 for a 6-3 to Milton Abbot. John and Steve won the doubles against Ottila and Tim. Milton Abbot won the match 6-4.

In division two Anchorage B played Gunnislake A although Anchorage won 9-1 it was a match closer than the score suggests. Anchorage raced into a 3-0 lead.

In the first Dave Vanstone just beat Mike Kinger 3-2. Dave Wilson beat Michael Alexander in straight sets. Roger Gilbert was taken all the way by Jack Flockton just winning 11-9 in the fifth leg.

In the next game Mike Kinger won the only game for Gunnislake beating Dave WIlson 3-2.

Anchorage won the next five singles and the doubles Dave Vanstone and Roger beat Mike and Jack for the 9-1 win for Anchorage.

The next match North Wyke B were at home to Moretonhampstead who went ahead in the first game. Ken Under beat Don Harkness. North Wyke won the next three. Mark Tooth beating Richard Underhill, Jill Dilley beat Paul Brodey and Mark beat Ken.

Paul won the next against Don. Richard took Jill to five legs just losing out. He also had five legs in the last singles beating Don 3-2.

Mark did well to complete a fine maximum and joined Jill in the doubles against Richard and Paul for a 6-4 win for North Wyke B.

In the last division two match Okehampton B were against club rivals Okehampton C. Okehampton C had two new players in their first year in the league led by Mark Ralph.

The youngsters of the C side raced through the match winning 10-0 in straight sets. Cam Brooking played the first time in the league for the winners.
