A NEW West Devon football club has just been formed and is looking for players to join their team.

Yelverton Villa FC was newly formed in June 2012 and will play in the Plymouth and West Devon Combination Saturday League. Their home ground is the Yelverton War Memorial Recreation Fields, Meavy Lane, and the club is looking for players, old and young, from Yelverton and the surrounding areas to join them.

Local fireman, player and coach, Martin Harris said: 'We are delighted to have received the support of the Yelverton War Memorial Recreation Field and Village Hall Trust who granted us the lease of the football pitch.

'The Trust members have a strong commitment to Yelverton and its local community and they wanted to support a football team with a strong local connection.'

The Trust Chair, Mrs Maureen Crosbie, MBE, said: 'The committee is pleased that the agreement was expedited in such a short time and that the football team is local.

'We have always tried to encourage local participation in the use of our field.

Chairman Bernard Harding, added: 'As a club we want to support and promote the local community and businesses, and we hope that the local community and businesses will, in turn, support us.'

Manager, Peter Lowther, said: 'Running a football club is never easy, and local volunteers are always welcome.

'There are plenty of jobs to be done including running the tea hut; halftime raffle; club linesman; pitch maintenance and fundraising, so if you can help then please contact us.'

Martin and Peter have been involved in football locally for a number of years, whilst Bernard, has decades of experience in grassroots football.

He is also a qualified groundskeeper, which is a huge asset to the club.

Training nights are Tuesday (Yelverton) and Thursday (Tavistock).
