THIS week Okehampton first team hosted local rivals Crediton in division three of the Devon Squash League.
Chris Elphick playing at string five had a close match against an experienced opponent. Despite a valiant effort, he lost 1-3. Shawn Jones continued his early season fine form at string four. Jones moved around the court really well — getting to mostly everything — and forcing his opponent into making the errors. A great performance saw him close out a 3-0 victory.
Justin Gliddon at string three played some good accurate squash, going 2-0 up until his opponent retired with a re-occurrence of an old injury — therefore giving Justin a 3-0 victory. Phil Kemsley at string one came up against a strong opponent and could not match his hitting or variation of shot, losing 0-3. This meant that the match depended on the last match, where Phil Allin was playing for Oke at string two.
Despite some great rallies, his opponent was too strong with some accurate and powerful hitting. Phil also went down 0-3.
It meant that a close match ended in a 2-3 defeat, or 7-14 points.
The strong string one and two players that Crediton were able to field made all the difference.
Okehampton squash team did not have a fixture this week, with both teams returning to action in a couple of weeks.
