Devon and Exeter three

Chagford 1

Woodbury 1

IN a tense and gritty encounter, both sides deserved a share of the spoils. Woodbury edged the early stages without creating too many opportunities to test Dave Penberthy, deputising for son Paul, in the home goal.

Most of the visitors' attacks met with a safe pair of hands and a solid defence.

Chagford worked their way back into contention as the half went on and were unlucky in front of the Woodbury goal, particularly from Josh Stanbury set pieces.

The second half saw the hosts come out with more determination and guile, the Stanbury boys and Andrew Davis able to push down the flanks more.

It was a complete surprise to the home team when Woodbury's Penberthy's throw to Potter dropped short, for Dave Evans to lob the ball into a gaping goal-mouth to give the visitors the lead.

Chagford heads stayed up in the face of adversity and their fortitude paid off as pressure saw the Woodbury defenders wavering and 'keeper Bradley Evans was called into action again and again.

Redemption came in the end for Chagford when their best passing move resulted in Josh Stanbury calmly slotting in the equaliser.

Both 'keepers went on to make top class saves as the game settled to a draw.

DESPITE battling back from an early 0-2 deficit, Chagford capitulated towards the end of a match in which they had hoped they would continue their unbeaten run.

Player-manager David Jordan and Sebastian Loram goals had pegged back a young but able Alphington team, sending the Moormen home with little Christmas cheer.
