The Yelverton Moorland Maidens are indoor softball cricket champions for second year running.

The Buckland Monachorum Cricket Club Ladies team (the Maidens), have been crowned Devon Indoor Softball Cricket Champions again.

The Tolchards Devon Women’s Cricket League plays indoor softball and hardball cricket leagues throughout Devon from January to March.

The five division winners of the softball league, Cullompton, Paignton, Buckland Monachorum, Exeter University and Barnstable & Pilton Cricket Clubs played in knock-out rounds at St Luke’s School in Exeter on Sunday, March 29.

The softball final was between the defending champions BMCC Moorland Maidens and Barnstable & Pilton Cricket Club. This was a closely fought match with lots of wickets taken, but the experience of the Moorland Maidens shone through and they eventually won by 71 runs to 57.

Softball cricket is played throughout the year, with both indoor and outdoor leagues. It is a fun and inclusive sport, played in a positive and supportive environment which makes it a fantastic way for women and girls of all ages, abilities and experience levels to get involved.

Matches are shorter than men’s hardball cricket matches, and the ball is slightly softer. Whether you are trying cricket for the first time, have previously played and want to play again, or just want to meet new people, softball cricket has something for everyone.

The Moorland Maidens play all year round, at Buckland Monachorum Cricket Club during the outdoor season from April to September, and indoors at Mount Kelly Prep School over winter.

Lesley Tomson, of BMCC, said: “This summer BMCC offers girls and ladies hardball cricket alongside softball option. Girls aged from 12 are welcome to come along and join in.

“We have a fabulous coach and a welcoming team of players.”
