IT was an exciting day for groups of adults with learning disabilities as they came together earlier this month to take part in their own 'mini Olympics' event. There were two groups from Launceston, one from Plymouth and Okehampton and s group from the Molly Owen Centre in Tavistock.
For 14 months groups have been training regularly under the watchful eye of their volunteer coach Dotty Allan. The sessions have been taking place on the track at Tavistock College. who have waived the fee for the track hire in order to keep this important session going.
Sessions include running, jumping, throwing, hand/eye coordination activities and invariably end with a game of rounder's with all athletes really improving their skills over time. The weather was extremely wet on Thursday so the college arranged for the event to be held in the sports hall. There were more than 30 people taking part in the different activity stations and everyone got to have a go at every activity that was on offer.
Molly Owen provided an array of bunting and balloons as well as a certificate and medal for everyone taking part, the afternoon was finished off with refreshments and cake.
Organisers said a big thank you to Neil Fairbrother and Tavistock College for providing a great venue and to everyone that bought refreshments, staff at the Molly Owen Centre for all their help and to everyone that came on the day and made the event a huge success.
