Okehampton Ladies A 8

Lympstone B 0

OKEHAMPTON’S Jackie Jarvis and Angela Herrod-Taylor faced the opposition’s number one couple first and took a while to find their form.

The match was fairly even until Jackie and Angela managed to up their game and take the first set 7-5. With some lovely lobs into the backhand court, they went on to win the second set 6-4.

Against the number two duo, the home pair managed to stamp early authority on the game and cruised to victory with wins of 6-0 and 6-1.

Kath Bolt and Beth Dennis, Okehampton’s second pair, started strongly and took the first set 6-0 and the second 6-2. They then faced stronger opposition in their second match of the evening.

Beth’s spin proved to be difficult for the visitors to deal with and with Kath’s strong supporting ground strokes they comfortably won 6-3, 6-3.

The home team were very pleased to earn the maximum eight points from the fixture.

Okehampton Ladies A 4

BOTH Okehampton pairings found the gusty wind and the unfamiliar astro-turf surface difficult to adjust to and Jackie Jarvis and Angela Herrod-Taylor were three games down before they found any consistency with their shots.

They eventually took the first set 7-5 and then the second 6-3.

In their second rubber against the number 1 pair, Jackie and Angela upped their game and won 6-4, 6-1.

Kath Bolt and Penny Holman played as the second couple and fought hard.

Despite many deuce games they were unable to convert the important points but enjoyed some fantastic rallies.

They lost 2-6, 3-6 in their first match and 3-6, 5-7 in their second.

Overall Okehampton were pleased to come away with a draw.

This moves Okehampton into second place in Division 5 in the Exeter and District League.

Dawlish 7

PAUL Love and Sam Whalley were looking comfortable and well up in the first set before Paul suffered a nasty leg muscle injury.

They held on to take the set 6-4. Paul bravely battled on but his movements were severely restricted and they lost the second set 1-6 and were not competitive in the championship tie-break which Dawlish won easily.

Paul was unable to continue so the second rubber was conceded to the opposition.

Stuart and John Jarvis wondered what had hit them as they quickly found themselves 0-4 down but managed to claw something back to lose the first set 2-6. They took the sting out of their opponents in the second set and from 4-5 down won it 7-5.

They again found themselves behind in the tie-break decider at 2-6 but dug deep to take it by 10 points to 8. They defended well against some power hitting from the other pairing and made a series of excellent winners to gain a 7-5 first set win.

The second set was equally competitive with Dawlish winning 6-4. In a thrilling tie- break the Jarvis duo were disappointed to let an 8-6 lead slip to a 10-8 defeat. Although Okehampton lost 4-7 overall they are still well placed in the league.
