THESE are exciting times at Okehampton Squash and Racquetball club as the club completes a major refurbishment of its courts.

To mark the occasion the club are holding a special 're-opening day' this Saturday.

A £50,000 grant from Sport England has been combined with the club's own funds to help allow it to put in state-of-the-art energy-efficient cladding, a new hot water tank and new heating for the courts.

The aim is to provide a more welcoming environment for existing and new members, while at the same time reducing the club's energy usage.

Both playing courts have also been refurbished to enhance the playing conditions. The courts are located near the sports hall at Okehampton College and just a short walk from the new sports pavilion.

C and G Plastering, based near Okehampton, were one of the firms involved in the revamp.

Club chairman Dennis Edwards told the Times: 'The club were successful in securing a sizeable grant from Sport England to help us encourage more people to come along and play squash or racquetball. We have also committed a large chunk of our own funds to really improve the club's facilities and also to provide events such as coaching workshops and taster sessions to encourage new people to take up the sport.

'For those who think that squash may be too hard, they should consider racquetball where the pace is gentler and can be played by all ages.

'Opening day is connected to the opening of the Sports Pavilion and people are encouraged to come along to the squash club to look at facilities. There is also the opportunity to watch demonstration games by players including a former national junior squash champion and a national racquetball champion. Therefore you can see how the game should really be played!

'There is also the opportunity to try for the game for first time with a qualified coach who will be on hand to teach new tricks.

'Events will take place from 10am to 2pm and everybody of all ages is encouraged to come along and try the game for the first time. It's great fun.'
