Kilmington v Whitchurch
WHITCHURCH made the long journey to Kilmington eager to make amends for a humiliation last year and a poor defeat last week against Whimple.
Wayfarers skipper Credicott lost the toss and his side were asked to bat on a good looking track.
Whitchurch changed a few things around from previous games which paid dividends. Powell and Towl blunted the new ball, sharing a stand of 49 for the first wicket. Watson then joined Powell and immediately upped the run rate striking four quick boundaries before holing out for 25.
Powell remained the anchor passing his maiden league half century. Billy Barriball, who has been in fine form with both bat and ball so far this season, then set about the Kilmington attack. Barriball faced just 47 balls in completing another half century and catching Powell's total until he was caught for 69.
Kilmington were finding it difficult to contain the run rate and only Gooding (2-40) and Potter (3-44) took any wickets.
Whitchurch marched past the 200 mark, once again notching maximum batting points. As the overs ran down, Powell completing his maiden league century in the last over. Powell carrying his bat for exactly 100 not out, as Whitchurch posted 249-6.
Kilmington made a good start in reply. Stonex starting well, before going in to his shell as wickets fell.
Save for too many wides, Whitchurch's bowling was superb throughout and was well backed up in the field.
Poole, Towl and Charlie Barriball chipped in with a wicket each, but at 110-3 at drinks, the hosts were still in the hunt.
The captain's masterstroke was to hold back regular opening bowler Sambells to bowl at the death. This decision paid off as Sambells initially restricted the runs and then mopped up the tail. He took a sharp return catch to dismiss Stonex for 55 and with Cook gone for 31 the writing was on the wall.
Billy Barriball chipped in with 2-33, but the plaudits went to Sambells as he finished the innings with 5-23.
Whitchurch recording their third win of the season and bagging 20 points, winning by 69 runs.
