Yelverton Bohemians
v Dartington and Totnes
YELVERTON hosted Dartington and Totnes for their first game back in the fourth tier of Devon Cricket for a number of seasons. Yelverton skipper Richard Goldsby-West won the toss and elected to field.
With the new 2013 rules in the Devon League introducing fielding restrictions, power plays and 'free hits' it was somewhat unknown territory for both sets of players and the officials.
James Harrison and Chris Pearson opened the bowling for Yelverton and Pearson struck with the first ball of his first over to remove Dartington's overseas player Brad Mitchell for a duck, thanks to an outstanding overhead catch at cover by Dave Scott.
With both Harrison and Pearson bowling tight line and length the Dartington batsman found scoring difficult and a further 2 wickets fell to leave D and T on 23-3.
Harrison finished his 9 over spell with the excellent figures of 9-1-19-1 with Pearson finishing on 9-2-27-2. Yelverton managed to control the rest of the D and T innings with skipper West 2-31 off 9, Matt Tamsett 1-21 off 8, Dave Scott 1-22 and veteran Geoff Brain 1-28 all keeping a lid on the scoring rate. D and T ended their innings on 156-8 with only Scott Colegate (37), John Colegate (20) & Sam Gornall (20*) getting going.
Yelverton's reply was similarly cautious against some disciplined D and T bowling and wickets were lost at regular intervals as Yelverton crawled along to 67-5. A bright sixth wicket stand of 41 between Steve Luffman and Dave Scott (21) got the innings back on track and when Scott was out, Luffman (63no) and Matt Tamsett (22) added a further 33 runs for the eighth wicket to almost see Yelverton home. Tamsett was out with five runs required and Steve Luffman hit the winning boundary as Yelverton won by two wickets. Skipper West, was pleased with the all-round fielding display with some outstanding catches held and pleased to get off to a winning start to the 2013 season.
Yelverton (18 pts) beat Dartington and Totnes (7pts) by 2 wickets.

Ivybridge seconds v Yelverton seconds
Yelverton lost the toss on a damp wicket and were inserted. It was hard work batting for the first 10 overs as the bounce was erratic, and there was considerable seam movement and swing for the Ivybridge bowlers.
Two quick wickets at the top of the order left Gerry Keen and Gavin jones to try and steady the ship. After the fall of Jones' wicket, Viv Kathari (71) and veteran Gerry Keen (46) put on a partnership of 74 to give Yelverton the foundation to build a respectable score of 186 for 8 with a useful blast at the end of the innings from Sam Parker (19).
In response, on a considerably easier track to bat on, Tony Carter, Terry Roe and Ian Loze bowled immaculate lines and lengths to restrict Ivybridge to 41-2 at the half-innings drinks break. The bowling was backed up by very athletic and commited fielding from a focused Yelverton. With the run rate climbing, the introduction of spin (Chris Cottrell and Gavin Jones) Yelverton managed to take wickets at key times, holding all their catches. Ivybridge were eventually bowled out for 157 (Cottrell 2-24, Jones 5-34, Roe 1-20, Loze 1-7, betts 1-45 and Carter 0-20 off 9).
Yelverton seconds (19pts) beat Ivybridge seconds (7pts) by 30 runs.
