Devon D

Yelverton v Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough.

YELVERTON's first XI made it two wins in a row following their six wicket victory at Buckfastleigh against Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough.

Skipper Rich West won the toss and had no hesitation in asking their hosts to bat first.

The mainstay of PCS and R's innings was a 70 run partnership for the fifth wicket between Paul Elsey (46) and Greg Bridgett (39) who rallied their innings after they had been reduced to 50-4 in 19th over with Chris Vinson (1-21), Rich West (1-31) and Iain Cunningham (3-40) doing the damage.

When the Elsey- Bridgett partnership was broken with the score on 120 following a superb catch by West off the bowling of Cunningham, the innings quickly folded as Kevin Treweeks (4-21) and Geoff Brain (1-30) mopped up the tail for the addition of only 29 more runs as Civil were all out for 149 off 43.4 overs.

The Bohemians pursuit of 150 started badly as the Yelverton openers Dave Scott and Pat Hobbs were both out with the score on 4.  Dan Cooper fell for 5 also to Sharpe to leave the score a nervous 13-3. Steve Luffman making his debut for the Bohemians was joined at the crease by Rich West and the pair steadied the ship with a 44 run partnership for the fourth wicket.  West fell for 19 to the bowling of Paul Elsey in the 17th over with the score on 57, with another 93 runs required.

However, Steve Luffman (70 not out) and Chris Vinson (29no) knocked off the remaining runs required in an unbroken partnership for the fifth wicket and sealed a six wicket win with a 20 point maximum.

n This week, the Bohemians are on their travels again when they visit Feniton in East Devon.

Second XI C

Yelverton seconds v Plymouth Civil Service and Roborough.

YELVERTON seconds, asked to bat, quickly found themselves in trouble at 14-3 with Andy Taylor (0), Lee Johns (5) and Dane Bunney (6) all back in the pavilion.

Veteran Gerry Keen (43) and Gavin Jones (29) partnership of 56 for the fourth wicket steadied things before Keen was caught behind off the bowling of Dan Piddock for 43.  Skipper Chris Pearson joined Jones and the pair added 26 more before Jones was run-out following some sharp fielding in the covers.  Tom Noble (2) came and went whilst 14 more runs were added.  Chris Cottrell joined Pearson and the pair added a quick 35 for the seventh with some belligerent hitting before Pearson was bowled for 40 by Raj Vijayakumar (3-40) in the last over as the innings closed on 146-7.

The PCS & R reply got off to a flier with first wicket pair Piddock and M Hamlyn putting on 48 in quick time.  Andy Taylor took the wicket of Hamlyn leg before wicket for 19.  Piddock (26) followed shortly to the bowling of Taylor, well caught by Pearson at mid-off.

The third wicket pair of Maloney (36) & Pitman (21) put on 40 before Pitman was caught by Lee Johns off Taylor with the score on 93.

PCS and R still looked in the ascendancy as Maloney and R Hamlyn added another 40 runs for the fourth wicket but when skipper Pearson (3-23) removed Hamlyn, Maloney and B Piddock in quick succession and Taylor (4-28) chipped in with his fourth wicket to leave PCS & R on 139-7 an unlikely victory seemed possible.

Tony Carter took the eighth wicket with the score on 141, and it was left to the ninth wicket pair of Sanders and Yates to scramble the winning runs with seven balls left.

An exciting game with the result in doubt until the penultimate over.

n This week Yelverton seconds are home again at Langton Park at 2pm to Kingskerswell seconds.
