Lewdown v Tavistock

TAVISTOCK played Lewdown in a closely fought local derby at Lewdown.

Tavistock ended the low scoring game due to the brilliance of wicket keeper batsman Manning, who scored a masterful 70 not out in the winning total of 117.

The day started with Tavistock winning the toss and electing to field. The homeside made a 'sluggish' start against the accurate bowling of Gauler and Stephens. As soon as the hosts tried to increase the rate the wickets started to tumble, with Gauler removing Witcher and Geering in short succession. Stephens then removed the obdurate ball and then the Lewdown main man Mutch, who smashed a couple of big blows before nicking one to Gray at slip. Lewdown were bowled out for a toal of 116.

The Tavistock innings did not start as planned with South African professional removing Churchill third ball for nought.

Further disaster occurred when Surre, hopeful Mike Cousins was run out, off the bowlers boot backing up.

However, from 7 for two, Manning and Gray steadied the ship and advanced the score to 52, before Gray chased a long hop and was caught behind. Josh Stephens followed very shortly after, run out.

Skipper Daymond arrived and he and manning then took control of the game. Manning was at his masterful best and the Lewdown bowlers were impotent against his and skipper Daymond controls.

However, with just 10 runs needed, Daymond was trapped lbw, Hughes and he were quickly followed by Cleave, Stephens and Downham, leaving just Gauler and Manning.

Manning obliged with the winning runs for the Moorlanders giving Tavistock the winning spoils in this low scoring thriller.
