Friendly Okehampton Argyle 0 Illogan 2 ARGYLE finished their friendly schedule with this match against visitors Illogan Royal British Legion from West Cornwall. Illogan are new to division one west of the Peninsula League this season but have an enviable reputation in Cornwall, being current champions of the Cornwall Combination and having won it several years previously. They certainly proved a stern test for Argyle and played some good football throughout the match. In fact both teams played good football but in different areas of the field and it was Illogan who proved to be the more incisive up front. Okehampton started well with some good passing movements but the Argyle defence looked unsettled when Illogan put on pressure. On 20 minutes, the visitors took the lead when a deep cross flew across the Argyle area and Matty Roberts fired home. This goal unsettled the home side who had been matching their visitors and four minutes later, Luke Abbott-Smith doubled Illogan's lead with a well taken goal. Argyle fought back and Adam Mortimer saw a fine header saved by the visiting keeper as half-time approached. The second half saw Okehampton put a lot of pressure on the visitors as they tried to bring the game back into their reach, but some good defending from the visitors kept them at bay. As the game drew to a close, Argyle twice came close to scoring, but the visitors also went close to increasing their lead on the break. This was a testing friendly for Argyle before the league season starts next Saturday, but with three players absent through injury, they found the visitors too strong on the day. Prior this match, Argyle Reserves took on Okehampton Veterans and it was good to see many of the famous names from the past turning out to show that they have lost none of their silky skills. However, on the day, they were no match for the pace and youth of Argyle Reserves who ran out comfortable 9-2 winners.
