Tavistock RFC Colts 8

Crediton RFC Colts 18

IT appeared highly unlikely when the Merit League formed after Christmas that these two teams who, after points brought forward, found themselves bottom with Tavistock 15 points and Crediton 11 points behind the leaders, would be the two teams competing in the final.

That both teams overcame such a deficit to reach the final speaks volumes for their commitment and is truly a great achievement.

The final itself was a very close encounter.  Crediton got off to an early lead through a penalty, however, their lead did not last long.

When Kier Murphy placed an excellent kick in behind the Crediton defence, Dave Milligan showed great awareness to run through and score.

Milligan extended the score shortly afterwards with a penalty and then, just as Tavistock had established a grip on the game, they suffered two significant injuries to Dom Connor and Kyle Maslen.

Almost immediately Crediton scored to head into half time at eight points each.

In the second half Tavistock did not live up to their potential and Crediton, who had defended superbly, added a late penalty and last minute try to secure the victory.

Having previously won 12 games on the trot, including home and away victories against Crediton, Tavistock Colts unbeaten run finally came to an end.

On the day Crediton had deserved it but Tavistock Rugby Club can be proud of their Colts achievement in reaching the final and finishing top of the league, and will undoubtedly benefit from the arrival into senior rugby of some exceptional young talented players next season.

l Tavistock Colts would like to thank Tavistock Tyres for their very kind sponsorship this season.
