Budleigh Salterton 1

Tavistock AFC 4

TAVISTOCK continued their push for promotion with this win over a good Budleigh team who put in a fine performance. This win moves the Lambs into third place with a game in hand on Teignmouth, who are currently in second place.

It was the home team that got off to a good start and for the first 20 minutes were the better side. During this period they created a couple of good opportunities to take the lead, and must have been frustrated at not scoring first during this period.

In the eighth minute a shot from the home team was dragged wide of the target from 18 yards. Two minute later from a corner kick a header went just wide of the Lambs' goal. The Robins were then awarded a free kick just outside the penalty area in the 18th minute, but the centre forward's effort flashed over the crossbar.

The Lambs then started to get their game together as Dan Follett saw his shot go wide of the target; he followed this up with another effort that the goal keeper saved.

The visitors took the lead against the run of play, when Dave Hallett found Chris Maskell with a beautiful pass just inside the penalty area; his shot came back off the keeper, to Carlton Farnham who prodded the ball home from three yards. The Robins continued to have a fair share of the play and looked particularly dangerous from free kicks and corner kicks. Martin Piper was called upon to make a smart save in the 31st minute to deny Budleigh from the equaliser. This was followed by another fine effort from the centre forward which flashed inches over the cross bar. Three minutes before the interval a Dave Hallett free kick for Tavistock saw a Chris Maskell powerful header well saved by the home keeper. A shot from Jordan Williams was deflected for a corner kick on the stroke of half time.

The home team started the second half strongly; Farnham, though, for Tavistock had a good opportunity to score when he cut in from the left wing but his fine shot was well saved by the keeper.

The Lambs then had a lucky escape when another fine corner kick was scrambled clear by the Lambs' defence. The game was now becoming very open with both teams going forward at every opportunity.

Dave Hallett had a fine shot well saved by the keeper in the 55th minute. Two minutes later the Lambs doubled their lead when Jordan Williams and Kelvin Fyneboy combined well; Fyneboy beat two defenders before squaring the ball to Maskell, who made no mistake from ten yards.

The Lambs were now having their best period in the game. On the hour Carlton Farnham made a good run down the left before passing inside to Fyneboy; his fierce shot cannoned back off the keeper to Dan Follett but his shot went over the bar.

Three minutes later Josh Robins whipped in a perfect cross from the left but it was inches out of the reach of the onrushing Farnham and Fyneboy.

The Lambs made it three in the 75th minute when Kelvin Fyneboy scored the goal of the game when he placed his unstoppable free kick from 22 yards into the top right hand corner of the goal.

The Robins reduced the deficit when another great corner kick to the far post found Danny Williams, who powered home a header.

Two minutes later the Lambs made certain of the three points when Chris Maskell found Kelvin Fyneboy who cut inside from the right, beating two defenders before rounding the goal keeper and slotting the ball into an empty goal from eight yards.

This was a battling performance by the Lambs who were possibly not on their best form but they did enough to deserve the victory —although the score line was rather flattering against a hard working Budleigh team.
