South West peninsula division one East

Brixham United 1

Tavistock AFC 1

ALTHOUGH the opening exchanges were fairly even, it was the home team that created the first opportunity to open the scoring, but Tavistock goalkeeper Martin Piper saved a fine shot from Stuart Bowker. The Lambs were finding it difficult to get their passing game in full flow, on an uneven playing surface.

Kelvin Fyneboy spurned a great chance to give the Lambs the lead, when a fine pass from Hallett put him in on goal, but he sliced his shot wide of the target from 12 yards. It was the home team that took the lead when Scott Trott was adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty area. Stuart Bowker converted the penalty kick to give the hosts a 20th minute lead.

Two minutes later Jack Thomas found Fyneboy for Tavistock with a fine pass but his weak shot was easily saved by the home keeper. Carlton Farnham then combined well with Follett, but his fierce shot was blocked, the ball fell to Will Stringer, whose shot was inches wide of the target.

In the 38th minute the Lambs had a claim for a penalty, when Aaron Hulme was in on goal; the visitors claimed for a trip as he went to shoot from eight yards, but the referee waved play on.

The Lambs continued to knock on the door but they could not find an equaliser, going in at the interval a goal down.

The visitors really upped the tempo in the second half; in the opening minute Sean Manley saw his fine header flash inches wide of the target from a Dave Hallett corner kick. The Lambs were now completely dominating the game, with the hosts camped in their own half except for the occasional counter attack.

In the 56th minute another flowing move saw the ball find Tavistock's Josh Robins just outside the penalty area and his shot flashed pass the wrong side of the upright. It was only some real last ditch defending by the home team that was keeping the Lambs at bay. A free kick from Hallett saw Manley's header blocked on the line; a goalmouth scramble saw the ball fall to Fyneboy, but his shot cleared the cross bar. Minutes later the same player beat three defenders but once again he could not find the target with his shot.

Aaron Hulme then powered past two defenders; he cut into the penalty area but once again he dragged his shot wide of the target. Josh Robins then saw another of his thunderbolts produce a fine save from the keeper as he turned it away for a corner kick.

In the 82nd minute the Lambs deservedly levelled the scores when Kelvin Fyneboy rose above a defender, to power home a header from a perfect cross from Jack Thomas.

The pressure imposed by the Lambs continued as they searched for a winner. It was only spirited resistance, desperate defending and lady luck that denied the Lambs from taking all three points. Sometimes teams do not get the result they deserve, and this was a case in point. The Lambs deserved to have taken all three points, but once again they spurned too many chances in front of goal. They just lack that cutting edge in the penalty area, and will again feel that this is another good performance but not the right result.
