OKEHAMPTON played Newquay who were positioned six places above them in the league. Strong Newquay attacking play resulted in one of their players breaking from the group, into the D and putting a powerful ball into the net.
Undeterred by this set- back, Okehampton fought right back — midfielder, Nicky Strawbridge, outwitted several players and passed the ball out wide to Zoe Curtis waiting on the wing; she used her speed to negotiate around the Newquay defence and put the ball into the D, resulting in Oke being awarded a short corner. Joey Drake hit the ball to Captain Jane Jones, who swiftly passed back to Drake — a swift pass from her across the goal found Viv Weatherington who neatly struck the ball into the net.
After half time, Newquay came back strongly, repeatedly putting the Oke defence under pressure. The home side won a short corner and the ball was played to their strong attacker at the top of the D – who fired the ball into the goal.
Newquay quickly regained possession again passing the ball up the pitch which enabled them to have several more shots on goal. However, goalkeeper and Oke player of the match, Daisy Morgan, dominated the area around her goal, jumping to save an aerial attempt on goal and hounding the Newquay players to enable Okehampton to clear the ball from the D.
The home team again took control of the match and despite tight marking by defenders, Newquay’s player was able to score her hat trick with another forceful goal.
Okehampton were not finishing the game without a fight. Midfielders Jane Jones and Sarah Marvin worked tirelessly, chasing down and intercepting balls to prevent Newquay from attacking again. They distributed the ball to Strawbridge and Curtis, who were able to pass the ball forwards to Sarah Bazeley, Eleanor Marvin and, making her debut, Livy Rubbra. They took the ball into the D and passed to their waiting team mates. Following a short corner awarded to Oke, Viv Weatherington picked up a rebound from the goalie and expertly slotted it into the goal.
Despite Oke regaining possession again after the push back, the match frustratingly for them finished on a short corner which Newquay quickly hit off the back line to bring the match to an end.
