The final event of the Weir Quay Sailing Club dinghy racing programme on Saturday was described as a ‘blast’.
In contrast to the previous two races, when the lack of wind was the reason that no one crossed the finish-line, this last race helped crown Steve Kirby and crew, Aaron Kirby, as the series winner and the only boat to finish.
Graham Reed did not start after gear problems prompted four quick capsizes and a forced limp back to shore. Chris and Sue Coomber in the Comet, Richard Platts and Sam Madar in the Laser 2, Jo Coomber in the Europe, Sophie Dandy in the Laser Radial and Gary and Judy Strong with John Madar in the Wayfarer all started but were forced to retire as the near-gale blowing down the Tamar blew the fleet away. Thanks go all the crews in the safety boats who were kept at full stretch in righting and rescuing those dinghies.
Overall, the racing season was characterised by the extremes; two windless races, two blow-outs and a perfect race day as a fulcrum to balance the 2015 record.
