Tavistock U12s 49
Devonport Services U12s 0
AFTER last weeks lesson in junior rugby from Okehampton, Tavistock stepped back up to the mark with a strong display against Devonport Services.
The first half was an even game with Services edging the forwards battle but the return of some key players in the backs for Tavistock kept the visitors at bay with some hard tackling and jackling in the midfield form Ollie Sampson, James Kenyon and full back Edward Tait.
Quick feet and hands from Henry Varndell-Dawes put Tavistock over the whitewash twice by half time.
Not wanting to be outdone, the home backs came out firing on all cylinders in second half with great body positions from Reuben Coleman and Jaxon Cann supporting the mauls.
Accurate lineout work from hookers Ben McKenzie and Jack Baker combined with locks James Roisetter and Dylan Owen to give solid platforms for Tavistock to launch the backs. Edward Tait provided some intelligent kicking from full back and later scrum half and provided a beautifully weighted kick down into the Services scoring zone for Henry to win the foot race for the ball and touch down.
A total of seven tries for Henry – including a full pitch length run- gave a slightly skewed scoreline which did not reflected the hard rugby played by Services right up until final whistle. Tavistock conversions came from Harry Edwards (6) and Edward Tait.
A second half of good game management and intense pressure on opposition ball gave Tavistock the front foot with Luke Edwards unlucky to be held up over the line.
This was a solid and quick paced game from Tavistock showing their full potential for the rest of the season.
