Brixham U14s 22

Tavistock U14s 46

IN this quarter-final of the Devon Plate tournament played in glorious sunshine, the teams did not disappoint.

After taking a little time to find their feet the Tavistock scrum got the ball out to Joe Sellars to go over for an early try. A quickly taken penalty deep inside the Tavistock half unleashed Charlie Fethney for the first of his unstoppable runs, his try neatly converted by Matt Smith.

Brixham fought back, and spent a long time within sight of the Tavistock try line. A huge effort and great passing from all the back enabled Tavistock to break free, with another try from Charlie.

Brixham remained dangerous, and answered with a well-worked try in the corner. Both sides gave away more penalties and from one of these a quickly taken one with a great run by Will Paull got Angus Hogg over the line, shortly followed by another try from Charlie.

Brixham stepped up a gear towards the end of the first half, dogged scrumming and rucking from them was rewarded with another try just before the halftime whistle, and two more tries in the second half.

Tavistock began to look vulnerable, but dug deep and Charlie and Will ran in three more tries - the last one after a stunning run by Will from deep in his half.

The whole Tavistock team played their part in the great result.

OKEHAMPTON started the stronger taking the game to

Devonport from the start. They recycled and passed the ball out well.

The young Okes found themselves with a scrum within the opposition's 22.

Liam Pyle broke blind from the scrum and ran for the line to get the touch down. The rest of the half was end to end stuff with both sides making opportunities but both sides defending well.

However Devonport became more effective at the breakdown.

The score remained the same until the beginning of the second half when the Devonport number eight made a strong run down the middle to score under the posts, which was duly converted.

This added to the frustration of the Okehampton side which started to affect their game. Devonport grew in confidence and began to take control more than they had in the first half and managed a final score in the last five minutes.

The game was a close one and Okehampton were disappointed not to come away with a win.

The young Okes should however take pride in how they all competed and contested to the final whistle.

Dev Services U12s 35

THIS was a disappointing result for Okehampton. Missing the talismanic Greg Daniel they struggled to make use of the overlaps they did create against a well drilled Services side.

A first half try saw the visitors go in at the interval ahead by seven points. Okehampton did create some chances but failed to make the first half breakthrough.

In the second period they tired and fell off too many tackles from which Services fully profited.

The final scoreline was a little flattering to the visitors but they did deserve their win.

Leon Horne took a quick tap penalty to cross for Oke only try midway through the second period. Corey Holliday adding the conversion.

After the previous sterling performance against Launceston this was setback for the boys, but a break next Sunday will hopefully see them recharge their batteries fully for the two upcoming tournaments that lie ahead.

THE visitors caught Oke napping and with a quick break from the first ruck, scored their first try.

The slow play by Oke continued, with missed tackles and poor rucking, allowing Devonport to play some fine rugby, passing wide out along the line and running strongly to score a second.

A third followed soon afterwards after a run by Devonport which was virtually the whole length of the pitch.

Oke realised they needed to up their game in order to have any chance of scoring. Nathan T seized his chance and after his quick tap penalty he charged for the line and went over. Dai Chi B then charged down a kick from Devonport which was picked up quickly by George D, for Oke's second. Devonport kept possession allowing them to add another three tries to their score.

Oke though were determined to narrow the lead and a great scrum by Oke led to James M running over to score for Oke.

The team pulled together better in the last five minutes to score twice - due to the quickness and agility of Dai Chi, deftly weaving his way through the defence to the try line.

Tries: Nathan Tomkins, George Dickinson, James McCulloch, Dai Chi Budiman (2)

OKEHAMPTON made hard work against a physical Devonport pack. Up front the Oke`s lineouts were improved but at scrum time their pack found themselves on the backfoot at almost every scrum.

In the rucks and mauls it was an even contest with both sides winning equal amounts of ball. For  Oke there were some powerful runs and neat use of their backs in attack. Tackling was strong with Devonport struggling to cross the gain line with Oke holding a good defensive line.

Oke tries were scored by Daniel Wonnacott 2, Joshua McCulloch 2, Cole Pengelley 1, George Cox 1, Jordan Hill 4, Mathew Denning 1 and Harry Laing-Taylor 1.

Tavistock U8s 7 tries

Liskeard U8s 4 tries

THE first match was even in the first half with both teams doing well with the ball but lacking the intensity in their tagging.

Tavistock began to make the tags and move the ball better and  as a result they opened a gap between the two sides and deservedly won 7-4.

Ollie Hawkins did well as captain and Tommy Murrin (2 tries) was player of the match for his tenacity in attack.
