ON Saturday Tavistock Amateur Boxing Club’s young boxers Leah Howe and Will Trebilcock travelled to Mayflower ABC’s event held in the sports hall at the Devonshire Health Centre, Derriford.
First in the ring for Tavistock was 13-year-old Leah in a skills bout. All started well for Leah and she was by far the more dominant boxer in the opening round against her opponent, Maddie Wright from Sydenham. Good solid lead punches followed by combinations put Leah in a good position. In round two the situation remained the same with some good work from both girls. In the final round Leah’s opponent forced the pace more and came forward with a double handed attack which put Leah under pressure, but she covered up well and replied in a similar fashion. All in all a good experience for Leah.
Also representing Tavistock was 11-year-old Will in a competitive bout against the home club’s Finley O’Neill. This was Will’s second competitive bout and he started the contest well against the slightly shorter O’Neill.
Will’s combination punches soon began to tell and with his longer reach he was able to dictate the engagements. In the second round the Mayflower boxer started to focus on closing the distance a little more but Will’s ability to keep at range kept the threat controlled.
In the third round both boxers increased the pace but the better work was done by the Tavistock fighter. Thirty seconds into the round a perfectly timed and executed straight left from Will shook the Mayflower boxer who was forced to take a standing eight count. Immediately on the command to ‘box’ Will put his opponent under more pressure and the bout was stopped in his favour.
This was a good result for Will, the dedication to fitness and gym work has shown a good improvement in his ability.
