TWENTY-two bowlers from Okehampton Simmons Bowling Club have just returned from a four night stay at Warners holiday park at Bembridge on the Isle of Wight.
The bowlers took part in the bowls tournament. With 22 players, the club were able to enter five rinks in to the contest with club captain Roger Pedrick and member Edgar Sanders joining up with two players from another club so that all could play.
After the round robin early rounds Okehampton succeeded in getting four rinks into the quarter finals. These saw two of the rinks progressing to the semi-finals. The rink of Jean King, Jean Middleton, Tom Fuller and Anita Hardwick was drawn against the other Okehampton rink led by John Westlake with Jim Hosegood and Richard and Sue Hearne. After a close fought match John and his team made it to the final.
It looked as if the Okehampton team was going to be defeated, going into the last and three shots down; however, with the shot wood against them skip John played a superb shot converting the end from one down to holding three thus forcing an extra end.
The Okehampton team held their nerve, to play well as a team to come out as the winners of the tournament.
The bowlers are now looking forward to the outdoor season in April when they will again welcome anyone who would like to try the game of bowls at a friendly and welcoming club.
