JOHN Hewitt was a larger than life Cockney character who affectionately touched many lives when he moved to the West Country in the 1970s. When John died in 2009 his family decided to remember him with an annual British Heart Foundation Golf Day at Hurdwick Golf Club, Tavistock, where he was a member for many happy years. Each year a large turnout of family, friends, colleagues and Hurdwick members return for a friendly fun day of golf, companionship, great food (including a hog roast) and many team and individual prizes. The winner was Neil Edwards with 41 points. The sum of £700 was raised for the British Heart Foundation who always acknowledge their gratitude to the club, its players and supporters.
