IN a pocket of rare fine weather last Thursday at Chagford Cricket Club, The Dartmoor Inter-Primary Schools Cup took place for its second year.
The competition, sponsored by Bovey Castle, started in May with 14 schools with more than 150 children participating at Lewdown, Hatherleigh and Chagford Cricket Clubs. It was played to conclusion with eight teams from six schools: Okehampton, Lew Trenchard, Boasley Cross, North Tawton, South Tawton and Chagford, vying for the cup.
The morning's play had two leagues of four teams playing three matches each. After lunch the semi-finals took place between Lew Trenchard and Okehampton A in the first game and local rivals North Tawton and South Tawton in the second.
The final matches of the day saw contests between Boasley Cross and Okehampton B, Chagford and South Tawton B, and the third and fourth place match saw South Tawton narrowly beat Lew Trenchard.
The final went down to the last ball with North Tawton needing to avoid losing a wicket to win the cup - this they did and were duly crowned Champions.
Most notable performances of the day were George Bryant from Lew Trenchard whose fine bowling included three wickets in one over, Kian Burns from Okehampton who scored 103 runs in the day and Mo Taylor from North Tawton who scored 104 runs in the day including two sixes in the final.
The outstanding player with both bat and ball was Will Cunningham of South Tawton who took six wickets and scored 84 runs.
Television personality Nick Baker, of the Really Wild Show, was on hand to present the trophies.
The Dartmoor Cup organisers would like to thank Chagford Primary School Parent Teachers Friends Association for serving the lunch and tea, and Chagford Cricket Club for hosting a thoroughly enjoyable day.
The other finals were reduced to 'playground bowl-offs'. The Dartmoor Shield was won by Lydford and the Trophy final by Chagford B team.
Next season the cup final will be hosted by Lewdown Cricket Club.
