Yelverton Villa 3

Tavistock Community Football Club 2

IN a spicy derby encounter, between two evenly matched teams, it was Yelverton Villa that emerged the winner.

Both teams huffed and puffed for the opening 20 minutes of the game, playing some good football but without creating many chances.

Dave Harwood came close for Villa after 15 minutes when he unleashed a dipping shot, producing a fine save from the Tavistock keeper. It was Yelverton that broke the deadlock after 20 minutes when the referee awarded Villa a freekick; Jonny Leppert stepped up to take the kick and his 30 yard strike flew into the top corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance.

Tavistock levelled 10 minutes later, when a defensive error saw Will Hall steal in behind Villa's central defenders to head home. Their joy was short-lived as Yelverton struck back from the kick-off. Mike Chatfield's incisive pass split the Tavistock defence and the pace of Matt Bird saw him get to the ball ahead of the Tavistock keeper and clip it into the unguarded net, giving Villa a 2–1 lead at the break.

Villa started the second half brightly, as Tavistock struggled to play into the strong headwind, and they extended their lead after 55 minutes when following a couple of strong tackles on the halfway line, the ball broke kindly for Chatfield who attacked the open space down the right side of the pitch before hitting a dipping shot which flew over the keeper into the far corner of the net.

Yelverton's defence was proving difficult to breach with Tom Lewis and Adam Measom resolute at its heart and Steve Harwood constantly breaking up play in midfield, but Tavistock gave themselves a lifeline in the 75th minute, when a half cleared ball fell to James Burn, whose low driven shot found its way through a crowded box and into the bottom corner.

In stoppage time Tavistock came close to stealing an equaliser, but James Phillpotts' strike was superbly saved by Villa keeper, Mark Easterbrook, to ensure Yelverton collected a well deserved three points.
