Fisherman's cup

Tavistock U16s 64

Cullompton U16s 31

TAVISTOCK completed their season with a ten try victory over Cullompton in the Fisherman's cup competition.

Tavistock pressured from the start and winger Dan Willis was up on his opponents quickly from the kick off; he scooped up a loose ball and jinked his way to the line but was unlucky to get stopped a metre short. Tavistock stayed camped in the Cullompton 22 and forwards and backs combined well, passing both left and right looking for an opening. Eventually space was created for number eight Billy Rowe and he busted over for the opening score.

Scrum half George Hillson had an excellent game driving his pack forward and he darted over for Tavistock's second.

Fly half Chris Watts looked to provide his backline with good ball and Will Trembath burst up the wing only to be tackled short of the line. Some lovely handling from hooker George Murrain created space for Sean Donnelly, who then showed his strength handing off three defenders before breaking clear to score. Hillson converted.

Cullompton kept battling and a lapse in concentration and a loose pass from Tavistock was intercepted and the away side raced clear for a seven point score.

Tavistock came back again with the powerful Ben Luke driving over following a well constructed maul from a lineout. Hillson again converted.

The home side were then guilty of switching off and conceded two further scores to a combative Cullompton side. Tavistock regained their composure and prop Richard Cann showed some nifty footwork to cut back on the inside and drive over right on the stroke of half time. Hillson converted to give the home side a 31-19 half time lead.

Playing with the slope in the second half Tavistock started brightly with a flowing pack's move across the pitch. Fullback Ben Milligan timed his run beautifully to create space for winger Billy McNicol to score in the left hand corner. George Hillson nailed a tricky conversion.

Tavistock looked to open the game up and forwards Theo Cousins, Will Gardner, Matt Birch, Steve Kirby and Harry Jeans all looked to off load the ball and keep the game flowing. Tavistock's set piece worked well with Cousins and Gardener dominating the lineout and front rowers George Murrain and Steve Kirby both taking strikes against the head in the scrum. Second rowers Cameron McKie and Scott Morris ran strongly all game and McKie powered over for a score with his second row partner Morris helping to drive him over the line.

Cullompton never let their heads drop and they came back at Tavistock again to secure themselves a bonus point try.

As the game broke up Tavistock started to dominate and a series of attacks resulted in centre Ethan Lamerton breaking clear after combining well with Ben Milligan and Chris Watts. Lamerton then scored his second sprinting down the wing and rounding a defender to score under the posts. Hillson converted. The forwards remained determined not to let the backs have all the glory and Ben Luke again showed his strength to drive over for his second of the day. Cullompton then brought the game to a close with the final score, which they converted.
