STAYING power is a quality that West Devon endurance horse Grey Medlar has in spades and who at the age of 22 still remains as competitive as ever.

It is quite an age for any horse but Grey Medlar is still winning 50 mile endurance races and was the Endurance GB Supreme Champion when ridden by 18 year-old Abby Chisholm in 2012.

The horse's success continues and earlier this month Medlar and his owner and rider, Abby's mum Jo Chisholm, from Lydford, won the veteran's 81k competitive endurance ride at the Three Rivers Endurance Ride near Salisbury.

The pair triumphed after an exciting racing finish following a gruelling six hours riding in the heat on the chalk tracks of Salisbury Plain.

'What is remarkable about this horse is the fact that in 2000 he was supreme champion with me and 12 years later he does the same again with Abby, and during all those years in between he has been competing at the top level, says Jo.

Medlar has completed nearly 7,700 kilometres in endurance rides and Jo's hope is that he will reach the 8,000 mark before he feels like slowing down.
