ON the hottest day of the year 172 golfers took part in the popular Tavistock Golf Club men’s  veterans’ open.  Despite the fast greens there was good, but tight, scoring. 

Winners in the home team competition were Chris Morley and Chris Henderson with 45 points; second Dave Treble and Peter Anglis with 44pts on count back on the last six holes from David Johns and Colin Rogers. 

The longest drive, Paul Vickers; nearest the pin on the 17th, John Berry; nearest the pin on the seventh, Rod Hillman. 

Topping the visitors’ competition were Mick Scambler and Bill Greetham (Royal North Devon) with 46pts; second Trevor Smith (Sparkwell) and Dave Collier (Staddon Heights) 43 pts on countback from Derek Preeze and Mike Rees (Carlyon Bay). Nearest the pin on the fourth, John Knapman (Churston); nearest the the pin in two on the 11th, Brian Lord (Carlyon Bay); the longest drive on the 15th, Keith Abbot (St Mellion).

The lady veterans also held their three ball better ball open but the weather was overcast which came as a relief to the players. 

The winners of the day were Libbaton’s team Val Symons, Pauline Down and Bee Baker with 86pts.  Following close behind were Ann Short, Yvonne Alford and Bernadette Maynard from Fingle Glen/Woodbury with 85 pts on count back from Tavistock’s  Joy Tynan, Myra Sussex and Pat Pope. Best away prize not in top three with 81 pts were Honiton’s Olwen Eaton, Gill Johnson and Catherine Doherty. 

Best home prize, not in top three, were Sarah Hanson, Jenny Kay and Sue Coles also with 81pts.  The best front nine prize went to Stover with 44pts and the best back nine to Wrangaton 45pts.  Nearest the pin on the seventh, Lesley Saffin, Thurleston.  Nearest the the pin in two on 14th:  Marion Seward, Wrangaton.

In the Devon Junior League Tavistock GC Juniors had a 4-1 win in their home match against Boringdon.

In the Roland Bailey mixed team event the winners were Mike Apps and Helen Heywood with 49pts; runners up with 43pts were Keith and Marian Stenhouse.

In the ladies’ monthly Stableford, first in division one, Hilary Picton 37pts on count back from Bridget Luckham; third Wendy George 35 pts on count back from Tracy Sutcliffe.  In division two, first Peggy Burge, 37pts; second Carolyn Crawford, 32pts and third Anne Dawson 31pts. Jenny Row had an excellent 40pts to top division three; second Barbara Port 39 pts and third Norma Thewlis 33pts.
