SEVENTY four teams played in the annual Captain’s Drive at Tavistock Golf Club, which is always a popular event.

The weather was fine and the scoring was high  — a good start to what they all hope will be another winning season.

With an excellent score of 45 points were Marc Ninnis and Junior Jamie Ninnis. John Whitbread and Martyn Moon took second place with 43pts on countback from Mike Apps and Brian Manhire.  In fourth were Richard Rowe and Dave Symons with 42 pts on count back from five other teams.

The Tavistock Golf Club lady veterans started their season well with a home win over Staddon Heights ladies by five games to two.

The weather looked promising for the Ping Pairs qualifier but by mid morning the heavy, sleety showers made for challenging conditions for players with later tee times.

Early starters Bridget Luckham and Donna Gage came in with an excellent 44pts — a great score which hopefully will take them through to the finals.  Wendy George and Marion Stenhouse were second with a commendable score of 38pts closely followed by Gilly Jarvis and Hilary Picton with 37pts.

There was a good turn out for the men veterans’ Wally Hammond Trophy.

In division one Dave Treble was first with 42pts, second John Harding 38pts and third Peter Leverton 36pts.  Steve Dickinson was top in division two with 42pts, second David Carter 41pts and third with 38pts Chris Morley.

In division three Ian Appleton scored 41pts, second Dan Pratley 38pts and Paul Mace was third with 37pts.

The winner of the trophy was Dave Treble with 42pts on count back from Steve Dickinson.
