TAVISTOCK Golf Club’s men and ladies’ veterans’ opens are two of the most popular events in the club’s calendar and this year they both took place in the same week.
With the course in excellent condition, good golfing weather and the only distraction being the superb views, players produced excellent results.
In the men veterans’ four ball better ball open the winning home team were David Bryant and David Young with 44 points; second were Dave Treble and Colin Wylie with 42pts on count back from Dan Pratley and Chris Morley, fourth Paul Whitby and Graham Horton 41pts on count back from Dave John and Peter Leverton; nearest the pin on the fourth, David Oriss; nearest the pin in two on the 11th, Ian Rose; longest drive on the 15th, Phil Hobbs. Scoring was close for the visitors but the winners were the team from Staddon Heights — J Perriton and B Stubbles with 45pts; aecond from St Mellion were A Edney and B Sobey with 42pts on count back from D Dow and M Fryer also from St Mellion and T Stevens and M Richards from Whitsand Bay; G Cole (East Devon) was nearest the pin, C Cole (Royal North Devon) nearest the pin in two and the longest drive, R Benham from the Warren.
In the lady veterans’ three ball better ball open the Bude team Jean Pearce, Roz Clarke and Sally Brankin with the excellent score 81pts took the honours. Second from East Devon with 76pts were Barbara Middleton, Linda Knapton and Deidre Mackness; third on 75pts were the Sidmouth team Penny Lyne, Brenda Summerfield and Marie Timms.
The first prize, for the away team not in the top three, went to Portmore’s Sue Lane, Andrea Shorrock and Barbara Wears with 73pts. The Tavistock team Pat Taylor, Val White and Jenny Roe, with 72pts, won the first home prize not in the top three. Two teams from Libbaton won the best front nine with 40pts and the best back nine with 37pts. Portmore’s Sue Lane won nearest the pin on the seventh and Sally Brankin from Bude won nearest the pin in two on the 14th.
In the men’s Captain’s Prize and Medal Nick Mier with a nett 65 was first in division one and was also the winner of the Captain’s Prize. Second was Dan Harris nett 67, was third Martyn Moon nett 69 on count back from Mark Russell.
In division two first Paul Reid nett 71 on countback from Tony Cooper; third was Doug Littlejohn on 72pt on countback from Alan Greening. In division three, first was Callum Watkin nett 69; second, Paul Mace nett 71 and third Richard Burrows net 72.
In the ladies’ monthly Stableford first in division one was Wendy George on 38pts; second, Tracy Sutcliffe 36pts, third Nicky Gawman 35pts on countback from Belinda McSherry.
Sue Gawman with 42pts was first in division two; second, Peggy Burge 36pts and third, June Kendall 34pts. First in division three, Pat Pope 35pts on countback from Sue Eastwood; third Norma Thewlis on 32pts.
